Pope Francis is still recovering from the life-threatening pneumonia he was treated for, but still visited St. Peter's Square in a wheelchair on Palm Sunday, which was not announced. There, he greeted the over 20,000 people who had gathered for the religious holiday.
During his convalescence, the Pope has been advised to avoid crowds – which he has disregarded on several occasions. This time, he did not wear an oxygen mask for extra oxygen supply, which he had worn at other appearances since he was discharged from the hospital.
The Pope, among other things, gave candy to a little boy and thanked the believers for their prayers. "In this time of physical weakness, they help me to even more feel God's proximity, compassion, and tenderness," he said in a written message – the way he often communicates during his convalescence.
