It is the first time since 2010 that a pope has visited Spain. When Leo XIV landed on Saturday, he chose to address the widespread abuses committed by the church's priests.
The abuse is “still an open wound,” he said.
This week, the Pope plans to visit some of those who have been sexually abused by church priests. In Spain, an estimated 200,000 children have been abused since 1940, according to a 2023 report.
Pope Leo's words were praised by Spain's King Felipe VI.
“Your clarity and determination, which I appreciate, are crucial in the process of healing and repairing the damage that has been caused,” he said during the reception.
