Stina Larsson, the Centre Party’s environmental policy spokesperson, tells Ekot that the water and sanitation systems are primarily the municipalities' own responsibility.

But when it is extra difficult, for example for municipalities with long distances, I believe that in certain contexts the state needs opportunities for a fund or something similar to help municipalities with the investments.

The Green Party and the Left Party also want the state to cover some of the renovation costs, but the government says no.

It is very strange that municipalities where politicians do not dare to raise water and sewerage tariffs and have invested in water and sewage should free-ride on citizens who have paid more every month for several years, says Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari (L).
