Polish Politician Investigated for Denying Auschwitz Gas Chambers

Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into Grzegorz Braun, far-right member of the Polish lower house. Braun, who received just over 6 percent of the votes in Poland's presidential election in June, described the concentration camp Auschwitz as "fake" this week.

Ritual murder is a fact, while something like Auschwitz with its gas chambers is unfortunately a fake, said Braun in Polish radio on Thursday.

The reporter immediately interrupted the interview.

Certain Christians in medieval Europe claimed that Jews murdered Christians to use their blood in rituals, a myth that has been widely found to be baseless.

Grzegorz Braun, from the far-right party Confederation, has also previously been accused of anti-Semitism. He was among other things in a storm in December 2023, when he interrupted Prime Minister Donald Tusk's inauguration to - with a fire extinguisher - extinguish a Jewish candle lit to celebrate Hanukkah.

Denying the Nazis' crimes during World War II, such as the murder of Jews and others in the concentration camps' gas chambers, is a crime in Poland. Around 1.1 million people were murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz in southern Poland, which was under German occupation during World War II.

Prime Minister Tusk describes Braun's words as a "stain".
