Young people are taking on "arson missions" via social media. Since mid-December, about ten suspected arson incidents have been set in Malmö.

According to police, the fires may be linked to an ongoing conflict in the city. The fires have caused damage to cars, facades, staircases and doors.

A total of ten people have been detained in recent weeks on suspicion of arson or attempted arson.

"The perpetrators are young people who take on assignments via advertisements on social media. I do not believe they understand the consequences of their actions, neither the great danger they expose others to by starting a fire nor the risk that they themselves could be seriously injured," says Rasem Chebil, operational manager of the investigation section in Malmö, in a press release.

On two occasions, young perpetrators have been injured themselves. On Christmas Eve, a teenage boy came to an apartment building carrying a gasoline can. He poured gasoline in front of a door, lit it and was seriously burned. The boy has been arrested in absentia on suspicion of aggravated arson.

Gas stations in Malmö and the surrounding area have been urged to be vigilant about young people buying gasoline in cans.
