The approach differs from previously common crimes, where fraudsters called their victims and only then came to their homes. Now they make direct contact instead.
"The reports we have received are about one or more men knocking on the door and claiming to be taxi drivers or saying they want to leave a message for a neighbor," says Emil Hagström, local police chief in Greater Gothenburg South, in a press release.
While one of the perpetrators stayed, it is believed that one or more others sneaked into the home to steal.
