The police must do more to retain experienced officers, given that almost half of police officers have less than ten years' experience, writes Katharina von Sydow, chairwoman of the Swedish Police Association, in an opinion piece in DN.

"The relationship between new and experienced police officers is crucial for safety, legal certainty, efficiency and results. Previous reviews have shown this. When that relationship is disrupted, the tacit knowledge that is passed on every day between generations in the profession is weakened," writes von Sydow.

The Police Association proposes greater opportunities for career change between internal and external service, and "attractive offers of part-time and flexible working hours for those considering early retirement", as a way to get more experienced police officers to stay in the profession.
