Romanian police carried out raids on three properties in the city of Brasov in central Romania on Saturday.
The raids were conducted as part of the ongoing investigation into electoral corruption, money laundering, and forgery on the internet, linked to the first round of the presidential election on November 24.
On Friday, the country's constitutional court decided to cancel the second round of voting on Sunday. The decision was made after the incumbent president, Klaus Iohannis, publicly disclosed classified intelligence material. It revealed that Russia had conducted a coordinated campaign on platforms such as Tiktok and Telegram to promote Russia-friendly Calin Georgescu, who won the first round of voting.
The results of the first round of voting were surprising. The NATO-critical and Russia-friendly Calin Georgescu received the most votes, followed by liberal Elena Lasconi, the mayor of the small town of Campulung. As a result, none of the pre-election favorites made it to the second round.
Georgescu has criticized the court's decision, calling it a coup. Even Lasconi, who would have been the opponent in the second round, believes that the court's decision is illegal and immoral.
