The case began with an anonymous tip that the two police officers, who are married to each other, were registered as living in the rental apartment, but lived in a house in another municipality. When they moved there in 2016, their son is said to have remained in the rental apartment for a few years. Since then, the couple is said to have rented out the residence to different people without the landlord's approval.
In interrogations, the woman in the police couple is said to have stated that they continued to be registered in the apartment because they intended to leave it to their daughter in the future. The woman has also said that the couple missed making a change of address notification after they moved out, and that she did not know that there was something called a population registration offense.
The police couple now risks a fine of nearly 80,000 kronor for the population registration offense and the case will be brought to court later in the fall.
According to the landlord, they have also made themselves guilty of unauthorized subletting and no longer have a contract for the apartment.
