Hundreds of criminals influence serious crime from abroad. Over 40 people are described by the police as key players.

The police's new situational picture shows that the gang environment is larger than the police previously thought. Around 67,500 people are estimated to be active in or connected to criminal gangs.

800 criminals are assessed by the police to be influencing serious crime in Sweden, despite being abroad. Approximately 40 of these are described as key players, reports SVT Nyheter.

It could be leaders, financiers, it could be recruiters – those who are most harmful to Sweden, says Deputy National Police Chief Stefan Hector to SVT.

The 45 different key actors are believed to be located in twelve different countries. SVT's mapping shows that most, 13, are in Turkey. But many, 10, are in Iraq. Other countries are: Tunisia 6, Lebanon 4, Morocco 3, Austria 2, United Arab Emirates 2, Greece 1, Iran 1, Cape Verde 1, Mexico 1, Philippines 1.
