Poland is closing Russia's consulate in Kraków, announces the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. The closure is a response to an arson attack in Warsaw a year ago.

Poland accuses the Russian intelligence service of being behind the massive fire in the Polish capital last year in May.

If these attacks continue, we will take further measures, warns Foreign Minister Sikorski on Monday, after announcing that the consulate is being closed.

I have a message to the Russian authorities: We know what you're doing, we don't accept it and we're taking appropriate actions.

Russia's Foreign Ministry responds by promising an "adequate response" to the closure of the country's consulate.

Warsaw continues to deliberately undermine relations against its own citizens' interests, says spokesperson Maria Zacharova, to the Russian state-controlled news agency Ria.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland, Ukraine's neighbor and close ally, has accused Russia of several sabotage attempts and other influence campaigns. NATO and EU member Poland is one of the main entry points for Western equipment to Ukraine's military.

No one was injured in the massive fire at Warsaw's largest shopping center on May 12, 2024. Russia has denied involvement.
