The decision to let the nations compete again - with both a flag and a national anthem - has been criticized from several quarters, while also receiving support in various parts of the swimming world.
Just because you belong to a nation whose leaders make controversial and bad decisions, an entire nation should not be punished for it, said swimming icon Lars Frölander to SVT.
The tone is even more critical in Poland, which is hosting next year's European Championship.
"We have informed the European Swimming Federation that athletes from both countries will not be able to participate in these competitions," says Otylia Jedrzejczak.
