Standard peacetime procedure requires visual identification of the vessel before a decision can be made to open fire. Now, it will be sufficient for the vessel to have been identified by radar signals or similar information.
We cannot remain passive when it comes to threats, and everything indicates that they will only increase, says Poland's Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk, adding that this kind of measure is otherwise only taken in wartime or during a state of military emergency.
The decision is partly motivated by the fact that it is seen as possible that drones will fly into Poland "on a daily basis" in the future, according to the minister.
