The port city in northwestern Poland is located on the Baltic Sea, 17 miles south of Ystad, and the discovery is located six kilometers off the coast.

This discovery will significantly affect Poland's economy and independence in terms of fossil fuel supply, says energy expert Sławomir Raszewski to the Polish public service company TVP, according to Ystads Allehanda.

It is the Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) that claims to have made the discovery after test drilling and analysis.

The area, called Wolin East, is estimated to consist of 33 million tons of crude oil and 27 billion cubic meters of natural gas, of which 22 million tons and 5 billion cubic meters are believed to be recoverable.

"If this discovery is confirmed, Wolin East can become the largest discovery of crude oil and natural gas ever discovered in Poland", says Poland's chief geologist Krzysztof Galos to Euronews.

The Polish news agency PAP in turn describes the discovery as one of the largest in Europe in the last ten years.

Rolf G Skaar, CEO of CEP, says in a press release that the discovery "represents a joint opportunity to unlock the full geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea".
