A EU source confirms to the news site Politico Europe that the force is included in Thursday's discussions, on whether a peace solution can be negotiated.

Tusk is currently conducting intensive talks ahead of Poland's presidency in the EU's Council of Ministers during the first half of 2025. On Tuesday, he spoke on the phone with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and also received German CDU leader Friedrich Merz – top favourite in the German re-election likely to take place in February.

Our presidency will be co-responsible for how the political landscape looks and maybe about the situation during negotiations (on peace) that may possibly begin in winter, said Tusk on Tuesday, according to the AFP news agency.

In the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, speculation is circulating about a peacekeeping force of around 40,000 people, similar to the one in South Korea after the 1950s Korean War.
