The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) says in a statement that "Pokémon cards are no longer just simple consumer products" now that the market for such cards is worth millions.
In February, a card belonging to YouTube personality Logan Paul sold for $16 million, or almost 160 million Swedish kronor. This comes as the domestic market in Japan has grown by more than 90 percent in four years, equivalent to $2.1 billion.
Despite Pokémon's Japanese origins, however, it is rather an American company that manufactures Pokémon cards that has driven the price trend, the LDP notes. From a political perspective, discussions on the issue with industry players are now set to begin, Bloomberg reports.
