The Slovenian is leading overall with 3 minutes and 31 seconds ahead of the Dane after an impressive mountain stage.
Prior to this year's edition of the classic cycling competition, the expectations were high for the duel between the dominators of recent years, Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.
But on Thursday, when the tour entered the Pyrenees and it was time for the first mountain stage, Pogacar showed proof of cycling that may have decided the entire Tour de France.
Pogacar pulled away when there were eight kilometers left. At the finish line, he was then two minutes and ten seconds ahead of Vingegaard.
