The 52-year-old is taking over from Gregg Berhalter, who was sacked in July after the USA was eliminated in the first round of the South American Championship.

Pochettino has previously coached top teams like Chelsea, Tottenham, and Paris Saint-Germain. Matt Crocker, sports director of the American Football Association, says that Pochettino's merit list "speaks for itself".

"Mauricio is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams", he says in a statement.

The Argentine - the first foreign national team coach in the USA since 2016 - will lead the national team in the World Championship 2026, which the USA will host together with Mexico and Canada. He will be officially presented as coach at a press conference on Friday. His first match is expected to be a friendly against Panama on October 12.

"I see a group of players full of talent and potential. Together, we will build something special that the whole country can be proud of", says Mauricio Pochettino about the team he will now coach.

Pochettino left his last coaching job at Chelsea after just one season, where Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League. According to an official statement from the club, the separation was by mutual agreement.
