"This is a natural step for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumption patterns in a situation where the overall demand for digital media far exceeds physical discs," the company wrote in a blog post on Wednesday.
Sony thus becomes the first of the major console manufacturers to completely abandon physical media.
Both Sony and Microsoft, which is behind Xbox, have released cheaper variants that do not use discs, but the main consoles have so far supported physical games and Blu-ray discs.
