Eyewitness images circulating online show the plane's nose and cockpit virtually completely destroyed. There are unconfirmed reports of several injuries, both in the fire truck and on the plane. According to NBC News sources, both pilots are seriously injured.
The Air Canada plane, which was flying from Montreal, Canada, crashed into a larger ground vehicle - reportedly a fire truck - which was in the wrong place on the airport's runway after landing late Sunday evening local time.
All air traffic to and from the airport - located in Queens, east of Manhattan - has been stopped, the US aviation authority FAA announced.
