Now they have signed a letter of intent to jointly work towards a new road connection under the canal.
The initiative is motivated by the significantly deteriorated security policy situation and new demands on a robust infrastructure since Sweden has joined the defense alliance NATO, according to a press release.
”The motorway bridge over the Södertälje canal is today the only large-scale road connection between the Stockholm region, the rest of Sweden and the continent. It is heavily loaded and lacks functioning alternatives for heavier transports in the event of, for example, operational stops, accidents or attacks”, writes the major companies and the municipality.
”Today, the connection is missing in the national infrastructure plan. The parties behind the letter of intent want to change this in connection with the government deciding on a new infrastructure plan next year”, they add.
