Pixar's Elio: A Unique Space Adventure for Sci-Fi Fans

What does one do if one is an 11-year-old science fiction lover who feels alone with their longing out into space? Easy. One makes sure to get abducted. We wanted to make a space adventure that does not resemble anything anyone has seen before, says Mary Alice Drumm to TT.

She works at Pixar in San Francisco and is one of the company's producers. After previously being involved in the production of both "Modig" and "Coco", she is now the main producer for the animated feature film "Elio".

It's the story of space nerd Elio who is not afraid of being abducted by aliens, on the contrary, he wants to be abducted. After many attempts, he manages to end up in a new world and gets drawn into the conflicts that exist there. And he meets aliens who all look incredibly different.

There are sixteen different planets, it required sixteen different species of aliens. We looked at old sci-fi movies to possibly get inspiration from there. We studied films about creatures that live deep in the oceans. Many look like aliens, says Drumm.

Looks forward

At Pixar, one always looks forward, says Drumm, who tells how it usually sounds: "work on it, what you're thinking about will work in a year or so".

Yes, it's nerve-wracking, but it usually works out well.

All Pixar films will be streamed sooner or later, but Drumm says that during production, cinema viewing is the only thing one thinks about.

We love to gather to watch theater or concert or film together. Especially when it comes to film, to sit together and watch Elio fly through space.

Drumm herself is very fond of science fiction, which is evident in the film.

We've included small greetings to other films in the genre. "Star Wars", "Blade Runner", "Star Trek". Hopefully, fans will be able to find the Easter eggs that are there.

Science fiction also contains action, how do you make all the action scenes child-friendly?

In "Elio", it's more about threats than about fighting. We check all the time with parents, what do they think. There were some scenes with threats that we toned down after feedback from parents.
