Verstappen Wins Azerbaijan GP as Piastri Crashes Out

World Championship leader Oscar Piastri was for the first time this year without points. The Australian crashed already on the first lap of the Azerbaijan GP. Max Verstappen won and now the battle for the F1 title is tightening.

With seven World Championship races left, Oscar Piastri's total lead in the Formula 1 circus is now down to 25 points.

He is being chased closest by Lando Norris, teammate with Piastri in McLaren, who finished seventh in Sunday's race in Baku. Behind him, the reigning world champion Max Verstappen is also closing in. The Dutchman won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and thus picked up all 25 points on Piastri and is now 69 points behind.

For Oscar Piastri, the competition ended in principle immediately. The 24-year-old Australian jumped the start, was therefore left standing in the starting grid and then had to do what he could to catch up from his position at the back of the field.

It did not go very well.

In the fifth turn, he lost control, in the sixth, Piastri drove straight into the wall. And so the race was over for the 24-year-old Australian, who before the weekend's race tops the World Championship table with 324 points.

It is the first time this season that the McLaren driver is scoreless.

Behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen, the Brit George Russell, Mercedes, finished second and the Spaniard Carlos Sainz, Ferrari, finished third.
