Phil Mickelson missed The Open this summer for the first time in 17 years. This came after allegations that the 56-year-old behaved inappropriately toward a female employee at a golf club and touched her in an “inappropriate” way.

The club then chose to revoke Mickelson's membership.

Mickelson has also been accused by the ex-wife of fellow golfer Pat Perez of, among other things, showing nude photos of himself. The allegations have been denied by Mickelson's lawyer.

The golf icon has now checked into a treatment centre, according to TMZ.

"Phil has sought help for family trauma and substance abuse," a Mickelson spokesperson told the site.

Mickelson has not competed since March. His record includes six major victories.
