Jackson, who directed the "Lord of the Rings" films, said in a statement that he is incredibly grateful to have "received recognition among filmmakers and artists whose work continues to inspire me."
Festival director Thierry Frémaux justified the decision to award Jackson the honorary Palme d'Or, saying there is a clear "before and after" Peter Jackson, who "forever changed Hollywood film," according to a press release.
This year's festival is the 79th and will be held from 12–23 May in Cannes on the French Riviera. Last year's honorary Palme d'Or went to American actor Robert De Niro.
