On Friday, a judge approved the indictment against Roberto Sánchez, and a prosecutor has requested five years and four months in prison.
The left-wing candidate is accused, among other things, of receiving more than $57,000, equivalent to over half a million kronor, in unreported party contributions.
The case, however, does not appear to affect Sunday's second round of Peru's presidential election, as Sánchez has one week to appeal. If he wins the election, he will be granted immunity under the Peruvian constitution.
On Sunday, Sánchez will face right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori.
