Peru is imposing a state of emergency on its southern border with Chile ahead of the presidential election in the neighboring country next month, AFP reports.

Right-wing candidate and immigration critic José Antonio Kast is predicted to emerge victorious in the second round of the presidential election, which Peru believes will lead to increased migration into its own country from Chile.

The state of emergency means that the military will reinforce border controls in the Tacna region, which borders Peru, for 60 days.
