All work in the mines in the northern area of Pataz in Peru is stopped for 30 days. Furthermore, a curfew is introduced between 18:00 and 06:00 during the same period, announces President Dina Boluarte.

The measures come after 13 people were found dead in a gold mine in Pataz over the weekend after being kidnapped a few days earlier.

The deceased worked for the mining company Poderosa, which reports that nearly 40 people have been killed in the area recently.

Peru has previously declared a state of emergency in several parts of the country, including Pataz, due to, among other things, violence.

Mining is important for Peru's economy, the country is one of the largest gold producers in South America.
