The leak occurred when one or more people misused a Danish company’s legal access to search the so-called CPR register, the Ministry of Higher Education and Science writes in a press release.

Denmark has just over 6 million inhabitants, but the leak also includes information about people who have died or emigrated.

People with a secret identity or protected address have not been affected. The case is being investigated by the police and has been reported to the Danish Data Protection Authority.

"I urge all residents to be vigilant," says Minister Christina Egelund in the press release.
