A crew member has fallen from a merchant ship in the Gulf of Bothnia and is feared to have perished in the cold water.

The accident occurred outside Skelleftehamn on a British vessel just before 9 on Tuesday. It was reported to be zero degrees outside and cold in the water, and a major rescue effort was initiated to find the man. The search was ended at 11 o'clock. Then it was assessed that the person could no longer be found alive, reports P4 Västerbotten.

One has searched the area on the surface properly and we have not found any person, so now it becomes a police matter, says Fredrik Strömbäck, press communicator at the Swedish Maritime Administration, to the radio.

It is extremely tough.

The man comes from a non-European country according to the police, who will dive in the area on Wednesday. A report of a crime against the Work Environment Act has been filed.
