A person has been detained following an operation in the Stockholm area, says Säpo's press spokesperson Jonathan Svensson.

According to Säpo, the person is detained on reasonable suspicion of espionage, which is the lower degree of suspicion.

SVT writes, citing a "source with insight", that the person is a Swedish diplomat. Sveriges Radio has information that Säpo has conducted a raid at the framework of the investigation at the home of a diplomat.

Säpo does not want to comment on the details. Nor whether it concerns a man or a woman, or if the person has Swedish citizenship.

"I understand that there are many questions about this, but it is an ongoing preliminary investigation and secrecy prevails. We have no opportunity to go into specifics," says Karin Lutz, press spokesperson at Säpo, to TT on Monday evening.

Advocate Anton Strand is the public defender of the suspect.

"I cannot say anything right now," says Strand to Expressen.

Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) says in a written statement that the government has been informed about the Säpo operation and the detention.

"It is, of course, a serious crime suspicion. The investigation must now have its course, and I cannot anticipate it. The government is continuously informed and is in close contact with the responsible authorities," says Strömmer.

Espionage involves a person secretly gathering information that can harm the security of the exposed nation, and then passes the information on to foreign powers.
