According to a statement on the band's Facebook page, he passed away at home in Brighton & Hove in England, with his wife and youngest stepdaughter by his side, and with MC5 playing on the radio.

Thomas, who suffered from kidney problems, worked until the end on a new album, which will be released posthumously, according to the post.

The message concludes by quoting Thomas himself: "My name is David Bloody Thomas and I'm the singer in the best bloody rock band in the world".

Pere Ubu was formed in Cleveland in 1975, from the remnants of the short-lived rock band Rocket from the Tombs. Pere Ubu released their debut album "The Modern Dance" three years later. They mixed garage rock with jazz, art music, performance, and anarchist philosophy. Over the years, Thomas has released masses of music, both with the band and as a solo artist.

Pere Ubu never achieved commercial success, but has inspired generations of followers, such as Joy Division, Sonic Youth, and Pixies. Even the Swedish band Bob Hund, who made their own version of Pere Ubu's "Final Solution" with their "Ett fall & en lösning" in 1997.

David Thomas was 71 years old.
