In 2023, 1,110 people sought planned dental care abroad. People from Norrbotten are overrepresented – and Finland is the most common country to seek treatment.

A compilation from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency shows that 491 people from Norrbotten sought treatment in Finland for planned dental care in 2023. Norrbotten is also one of the counties in Sweden where the number of treating dentists per capita is lowest.

For residents of Västra Götaland and Stockholm seeking dental care abroad, Spain is the most common country. Poland is also one of the more common destinations.

The costs for planned dental care abroad amounted to the equivalent of SEK 5.4 million last year.

The people in the Social Insurance Agency's compilation are registered in Sweden.

Then there are also people who live part of the year both in Sweden and in other countries, and if you do that, there may also be cases where you receive healthcare abroad when you are already there, says Jonas Erlandsson, analyst at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
