The chatbot Grok, created by Elon Musk's company XAI, will begin to be used by the Pentagon later in January.
According to Hegseth, "all appropriate data" from the military's IT systems should be entered into the tool.
"AI is only as good as the data it gets, and we will make sure it is there," the war minister said, adding that he dismisses any AI models "that do not allow you to wage war."
"Military AI systems will operate without ideological constraints that prevent legitimate military applications. The Pentagon's AI will not be "woke," Hegseth continued."
The announcement comes just days after sharp criticism was directed at Grok after images with sexual content were generated. Among those affected was Sweden's Minister of Energy and Industry, Ebba Busch (KD), who was pictured in a bikini.
Grok has previously been in the spotlight for, among other things, statements about the Holocaust and the tool has been blocked in Malaysia and Indonesia.
