Josh Shapiro, the Democratic Governor of the state of Pennsylvania in the USA, had to evacuate his residence after an arson attack. The police have arrested a suspected perpetrator.

According to the police, someone set a fire during the night against Sunday, causing significant damage to the residence building in the state capital Harrisburg.

The governor was evacuated along with his family, who had celebrated the beginning of the Jewish holiday Pesach on Saturday evening. The police are investigating the incident as arson but do not want to comment on any potential motives.

Shapiro, who is seen as a possible presidential candidate for the Democrats in 2028, says in a statement on X that the family woke up to the police knocking on the door after the fire broke out.

"Thankfully, no one was injured and the fire could be extinguished", he continues.

Later on Sunday, the police announced that a person had been arrested on suspicion of setting the fire.
