"It is with deep disgust and concern that I have taken part of the news about an attack on the Italian Unifil headquarters in southern Lebanon, in which some of our peacekeeping soldiers were injured", says a statement from Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Her Foreign Minister colleague Antonio Tajani says that the Shia militia Hezbollah is likely behind the attack.
Unifil announces that two rockets were "probably fired by Hezbollah or affiliated groups". It is the "third attack on this Unifil base in Shamaa within a week".
In a statement from Hezbollah, it is reported that fighters from the militia targeted "a gathering of Israeli enemy forces in Shamaa with a rocket salvo".
In parallel, heavy fighting is reported to be ongoing between Israeli soldiers and Hezbollah in different parts of southern Lebanon.
