Although he is best known as Professor Charles Xavier and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the “X-Men” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” series and films, respectively, Stewart spent much of his career on stage.

He played everything from Claudius to Macbeth and often performed a one-man version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” He appeared in Harold Pinter’s “No Man’s Land” and Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” on both the West End and Broadway, alongside his friend Ian McKellen.

Patrick Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles after “a short and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, his longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak announced.

Stewart was nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Captain Ahab in the 1998 miniseries “Moby Dick” and for his portrayal of King Henry II in “The Lion in Winter” in 2003.

In 2010, Patrick Stewart was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

I could never have imagined that something like this could happen to me, and the fact is that it still feels pretty surreal, he said.
