Indonesia missed the opportunity over the weekend to reach the World Championship 2026 in football. Now the former goal king Patrick Kluivert gets fired as the association captain for the Asian national team.

After first losing to Saudi Arabia and then Iraq, it became clear that Indonesia will miss the World Championship in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next summer.

Indonesia has never previously reached this far in the Asian World Championship qualifying, but it was not enough for the 49-year-old Kluivert to keep his job for the country's men's national team. During his playing career, he was a celebrated goal scorer in clubs such as Barcelona and Ajax, as well as in the Netherlands national team.

Saudi Arabia won the three-team group, which was decided over single matches, and took care of the World Championship ticket in the Asian continued qualifying. In the other group, Qatar took a direct spot. The second-placed United Arab Emirates and Iraq will meet in a double match for a place in an intercontinental playoff.
