Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has approved a debate and subsequent vote in the House of Commons on whether Prime Minister Starmer should be investigated for misleading the House.

Starmer said earlier in April that he had not pressured the Foreign Office to approve the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US. That was contradicted by Olly Robbins, a former senior Foreign Office official, who accused Downing Street of "constant pressure".

According to British media, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said investigations of this type should only be carried out in exceptional cases, but after much hesitation he approved a debate. Among those who have called for an investigation is the Tory party leader Kemi Badenoch.
