“We are delighted to celebrate his immense talent and, more broadly, film from a country deeply engaged in questioning our time,” says festival president Iris Knobloch in a press release.
62-year-old Park Chan-wook is one of South Korea's most acclaimed filmmakers and internationally recognized for works including the brutal "revenge trilogy", "The Little Drummer Girl" with Alexander Skarsgård, and the thriller "Decision to Leave", inspired by Sjöwall-Wahlöö's novels about Martin Beck.
The director's chairmanship "symbolizes the festival's early and deep connection to Korean film," the organizer writes in the press release.
The Cannes Film Festival, the 79th in the series, runs between May 12 and 23.
