The market hall is centrally located in the French capital’s third arrondissement and has been there since 1615.
"The market has been completely destroyed," Pierre de Bouvier, a lieutenant colonel in the rescue service, told journalists on Monday morning.
Nothing is left.
The market got its name from the red clothes worn by orphans at the nearby hospital until 1772.
Marché des Enfants Rouges is a popular tourist destination, and Food & Wine magazine ranked it fifth among the world’s best street food markets this year.
