A new high-level meeting on how Europe can assist Ukraine with security guarantees in the event of a potential peace agreement with Russia will be held in Paris on Thursday, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, according to diplomatic sources for Financial Times.
Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer, NATO's Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected to attend the meeting, according to the sources.
Ukraine has, among other things, requested support in the form of soldiers on the ground from its Western allies in the event of a peace, to prevent new Russian aggressions.
Several European countries have been hesitant to provide soldiers. But already now, there are "pretty detailed plans" for what such a support force would look like, according to von der Leyen.
We have a clear plan and we have an agreement with the White House, and this work is proceeding very well, says von der Leyen to Financial Times.
