Just like in the district court, the father is sentenced to five years in prison, while the mother's sentence is reduced from four years in prison to three and a half years in prison.
The children, who are part of a large sibling group, began telling about the events after being taken into care by social authorities.
The Court of Appeal states that the confinements have lasted for up to several hours and notes that it has occurred repeatedly over several years.
It was the father who locked in the children, but the mother was aware of what had happened and failed to intervene. Since she has a guarantee liability, an obligation to protect her children, she is therefore also convicted of unlawful deprivation of liberty. According to the court, however, she was not aware of every confinement.
The father is also convicted of several cases of assault against his children.
