Paralympic Bronze Medalist Nicolina Pernheim Goodrich Faces Career Halt

In September, Nicolina Pernheim Goodrich won a bronze medal in judo at the Paralympic Games in Paris. But now her career may be over – after her appeal against a withdrawn attendant support was rejected. It's tough to get such a message, says the 33-year-old to Radiosporten.

Two months after the bronze in Paris, the City of Gothenburg decided to withdraw Pernheim Goodrich's escort service. The decision would result in the judoka, who has been blind since birth, having to end her judo career.

I can't continue with my elite judo efforts. From taking a bronze at the Paralympics in September to not being able to train is completely crazy. Then there's going shopping and going on long walks and buying things for my daughter and attending open preschool. There's so much that becomes very difficult now, or maybe not possible at all. I'm very desperate, she said to GP when she received the news.

She then chose to appeal the decision to the administrative court – where she has now been denied, according to Radiosporten.

It's tough to get such news and then I don't know if it's worth competing anymore, she says to the radio channel.

We're thinking about whether to appeal even higher up or if it's even worth it.

For three days now, the 33-year-old has been living without an escort.

It's hard to see elite sports as part of it. A lot in my life becomes harder. It takes so incredibly much time and energy to be blind and live an active life.
