It was when Paraguay's Miguel Almirón was sent off for covering his mouth while speaking that commentator Jorge Veras lost his temper. He called the referee "a thief," said the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had "killed football," and blamed FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Veras has since apologized directly to FIFA. However, his apology does not appear to have been accepted, and FIFA has revoked his accreditation and expelled him from the World Cup.

ABC, the Paraguayan channel for which Veras works, immediately removed him from tournament coverage. The channel said it was disappointed by the punishment and called it "extreme" and "disproportionate," ABC said in a press release.
