Paolo Maldini’s title will be technical director at the federation, and his contract runs until 2030.
"Maldini has always been my first choice," said federation president Giovanni Malagò in a statement.
Former PSG sporting director Leonardo will be Maldini’s adviser. Their first task is to find a new national team coach for the men’s senior team, after Gennaro Gattuso resigned following the failed World Cup qualifiers. It was the third time in a row that the four-time world champions missed the World Cup.
With multiple Champions League titles and more than 600 appearances for AC Milan, as well as three league titles and over 100 caps for Italy, former full-back Paolo Maldini is a legend in Italian football.
