Journalists and authors who have been killed in Gaza are being honored during a protest outside the Book Fair in Gothenburg. The genocide has claimed an extremely large number of victims – above all among our journalist and author colleagues. We have come here to honor them, says author Balsam Karam.

For the second year in a row, a protest and a memorial are held by Bread and Roses, a literary society for women and trans people with members such as Athena Farrokhzad, Burcu Sahin and Balsam Karam.

The names of the killed journalists are read out and explained as ”present”. The organizers also criticize that the Book Fair provides space for the friendship association Sweden-Israel, which would participate, among other things, with the seminar ”The fabricated famine in Gaza”, a headline that was later changed.

We view seriously the Book Fair's decision to provide space for genocide propaganda with conversations that not only deny facts but also blame Palestinians for their own famine and death, reads one of the participants in a statement.

Signs lying on the ground criticize how Swedish media have covered the events, with messages such as ”The ceasefire has not been ’broken’, the Israelis have broken the ceasefire”. In addition, individual Swedish journalists are pointed out, with name and picture.

At least 252 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023, show the UN's latest figures.
