His wife Bushra Bibi is sentenced to seven years in prison at the same time, reports AFP. The couple is also ordered to pay fines according to the verdict.

The former cricket star Khan was ousted in 2022 through a vote of no confidence after he fell out with the powerful military leadership in Pakistan. Since then, he has been convicted in several trials in cases that he himself considers to be politically motivated.

Supporters of Khan have been protesting for months, demanding that the former leader, who has already been in prison for over a year, be released. Several people have been killed and nearly 1,000 arrested in connection with the protests.
