Sources in Pakistan's government tell the news agency AFP that the country will not participate with a men's national team in the Asia Cup in field hockey in India.
Concern for the national team's safety is cited as the reason.
The four-day conflict between the countries in May cost 70 people their lives. The violence has exacerbated the long-standing tense relationship between the two nuclear-armed nations.
The Asia Cup for men will be held in India in August and September. Pakistan also intends not to participate in the junior World Championship in India in November.
Field hockey is a major sport in both countries. Pakistan has won three Olympic Games gold medals and become World Championship four times but has in recent years plummeted to 15th place in the world rankings.
If Pakistan stands by the decision not to participate in the Asia Cup, it is highly likely that participation in next year's World Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands is at risk.
