Attackers stormed a police compound adjacent to a mosque and detonated an explosive device before gunfire erupted. The blast was described as powerful enough to damage many houses in the area. The mosque is in the city of Kohat, in a province that borders Afghanistan to the west.
More than 100 people were reportedly injured. On Saturday, fighting was still ongoing with several attackers who, according to police, had barricaded themselves in part of the complex.
The local group Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a faction with links to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan accuses militant groups in Afghanistan of a rise in violence, something the Taliban government in Kabul denies.
